All hail the Oarsome Foursome!

Some of you may have noticed a not-so-subtle shout-out in one of our recent shop videos. But where is Gorran Haven, and why did we mention it?

Well, it started out as a bit of fun. Ian and Linda are regular customers who come to Hay from time to time, and they were here for a few days over the Winter Weekend. Ian jokingly dared me to mention Gorran Haven in one of my videos and as I am always up for a challenge, I said yes! While I was making a note of the spelling, Linda mentioned that she had something interesting that I could mention too. When she explained what it was I knew it would need more than a name-check in a video!

So - Linda is part of the Oarsome Foursome, four ladies from Cornwall who are essentially planning to row across the Atlantic for charity. That's 3000 miles to me and you, from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean. What on earth could have possessed Linda to do such a thing?!

Well, it's for a great cause. You can see the charities they are supporting on their website, all of which are hugely deserving of support. But this is more than just a sponsored walk, no matter how noble that might be. The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is the premier ocean rowing event in the world - pushing mind and body to the limit for three months.

We think it is an incredible project, but there is a lot of work and preparation to be done to make it a reality. Crucially, the group need to raise the funds necessary to take part, in order to then be able to raise more funds for their charities. It's a big commitment, and they've set up a JustGiving page to help spread the word. You can also follow them on Facebook and Twitter to keep up to date with the challenge.

We want to wish Linda every success with this amazing attempt - and look forward to hearing more about it in the run-up to December 2019!
