Bamboo Lacquered Small Bowls

What: These gorgeous, bright bowls are made from sustainable bamboo and coiled using traditional techniques. 10.5cm x 6cm. Available in Red or Purple. Made in Vietnam under fair trade conditions.

How: The raw bamboo is cut down into very small strips, softened and then moulded with glue into the shape required. It is then dried in natural sunlight and sanded and polished many times. Finishing involves delicate and highly skilled workmanship involving the application by hand of many layers of coloured lacquer to achieve a perfect iridescent finish.
Who: Made by master coilers in Vietnam, many of whom are home workers. All have good rates of pay and benefits including subsidised medical care, sick pay, insurance & paid holidays.
Why: Bamboo is the earth's fastest growing plant so these bowls are super eco friendly. Fair trade is an effective way of creating jobs and income for the craftsmen who make these products, and helping them grow their businesses.
