The Establishment - Owen Jones

Sold Out

What: Owen Jones sets out on a journey into the heart of our Establishment, from the lobbies of Westminster to the newsrooms, boardrooms and trading rooms of Fleet Street and the City. Exposing the revolving doors that link these worlds, and the vested interests that bind them together, Jones shows how, in claiming to work on our behalf, the people at the top are doing precisely the opposite. In fact, they represent the biggest threat to our democracy today - and it is time they were challenged.

How: In The Guardian's "Writers pick the best books of 2014", several authors added The Establishment to their top lists. Shami Chakrabarti praises the authenticity of Jones' voice, stating, "at a time when politicians aspire to be pop stars and vice versa, it is refreshing that a genuine political writer and thinker can achieve such popular appeal". Naomi Klein also praises the "bracing and principled" book and adds it to her top list for the year. Matt Haig said Jones' book is a, "convincing look at the vested interests that thwart democracy."

Who: Owen Jones is a columnist, author, commentator and political activist. He is a regular columnist for The Guardian and New Statesman.
Why: We have hand picked a small but growing selection of books which we hope complement the fair trade products we stock. Inspiring, engaging and educational, we hope that these books can help move forward the discussion and debate around creativity, social justice and sustainability.
