Fair Trade Summer Festivals

by Andrew Williams | June 30, 2015 | 0 Comments

Did you catch any of Glastonbury over the weekend? We have been trying to watch some of it on iPlayer, our favourites so far have been Belle & Sebastian, The Who, Palma Violets and Father John Misty. It certainly sets a high bar for the rest of the summer festival season.

It got us thinking of what we'd take along to our dream summer festival (assuming we could get a ticket). We'd need something cool to wear - perhaps a dress from Mata or a tee shirt from Rapanui. Definitely a spare pair of Pants to Poverty undies, and socks from Minga Berlin.

We'd be travelling light, but we'd still want one of our cool What Daisy Did bags - safe in the knowledge that we'd be truly unique! For when we needed a sugar rush we'd indulge in some Zotter chocolate - possibly even a bar of Scotch Whisky flavour if we were heading to T in the Park!

Then when we got back we'd want to tell you all about it - at which point we'd reach for DO Story, from our selection of DO Books. Then it would be time for a long lie down.

We'll let you know whether we get to indulge any of our fantasies at Green Man this year!

Responsible Retail Therapy

by Louise Davies | June 07, 2015 | 0 Comments

We had a brilliant time during Hay Festival (more on the great speakers and events later). It’s wonderful for Hay to be bustling with people and to meet regular customers who pop back and see us each year. We also meet lots of new customers who love our combination of fair trade and stylish products. My favourite comment was from one such customer who said how pleased she was to buy something and not feel guilty afterwards. It’s true – most of us out for a spot of ‘retail therapy’ have a pang of guilt when handing over our well-earned cash for non-essentials. Maybe it's because we're worried about our bank balance; or that it's something we don't really need that might sit in the back of a cupboard; or perhaps it's because we're not sure who, how and where it was made and whether someone might have suffered for our spontaneous purchase.

That's what is so brilliant about fair trade. Not only can you buy quality, special products that have often been hand made with huge care, but you can feel good not guilty about your purchase. Buying fair trade is using consumerism for the greater good, building an economy that works for everyone and helps bring people out of poverty. So next time you need some retail therapy, make it responsible and do some feel-good fair trade shopping!

Chocs away!

by Andrew Williams | May 14, 2015 | 0 Comments

We are now in the final stages of gearing up for the annual Hay Festival which begins next week. There are so many highlights to look forward to - we're just hoping we have time to go and see some of the events!

In any case, as you'd imagine, we have been stocking up on some of our best sellers in advance of the influx of visitors. Today we had a delivery from Zotter, our favourite ever chocolate supplier. We have loads more stock of all the incredible flavours you know and love - from goat's milk and sheep's milk, to a fantastic vegan selection, and not forgetting of course our all time favourite - tequila with salt and lemon!

You can grab a bar now online. And if you're anywhere near Hay during the Festival - come and say hello!

Red, blue, yellow, green... and every colour in between!

by Andrew Williams | May 06, 2015 | 0 Comments

If election madness in the UK is starting to get you down, you can console yourself with a new delivery we've received of flip flop animals! These incredible creatures are made in Kenya by Ocean Sole. Every year, thousands of lost or discarded flip flops wash up on the beaches of Kenya, causing chaos for bird sanctuaries and turtle preservation projects. Now this waste material is being turned into an incredible safari of wild animals!

Due to the nature of their production, each one of these is completely different. Even the doorstops feature a bewildering array of colours. Believe it or not, we only stock the two smallest sizes in production - Ocean Sole also create huge floor-standing creatures for zoos and museums around the world.

We love the animals and the story behind them. You can pick up your own miniature piece of art right now!
