Happy World Elephant Day!

by Andrew Williams | August 12, 2015 | 0 Comments

Did you know that today is World Elephant Day? How could you forget? (boom boom).

Elephants seem to have such a deep connection for us humble humans, representing wisdom, power, strength and a certain ancient connection to something bigger than all of us. It's difficult to imagine a world without elephants, but sadly that is a future we are facing unless we act now. Find out more on the website.

After rabbits, I would say that elephants are our best selling animal in the shop. We seem to have them in all shapes and sizes! Here are some of our favourites... click on the pictures to find out more.

Elephant Cement Messenger Bags from Cambodia.

Sunset Elephant card, signed by the artist who made it.

 Flip Flop elephant from Kenya.

Wooden elephant from Sri Lanka.

Home Sweet (Fair Trade) Home

by Andrew Williams | July 22, 2015 | 0 Comments

We are so pleased to be settling in to our new home on Lion Street in the centre of Hay on Wye. We loved being up at Hay Castle but we are confident that our new location will make us accessible to many more fair trade shoppers.

As part of our move we have expanded several of our ranges. We have more fantastic jewellery from Tamil Nadu, Thailand, the Philippines and Peru, more kids' toys, new lines of enamelware from South Africa (perfect for camping!) and a growing range of books and magazines. We don't have everything on line quite yet but keep checking back for more interesting new products.

We have had a fantastic reaction so far and we hope to be able to welcome many more of you to our shop over the months ahead. Do say hello if you are passing! Here are some snaps to whet your appetite...

Fair Trade Summer Festivals

by Andrew Williams | June 30, 2015 | 0 Comments

Did you catch any of Glastonbury over the weekend? We have been trying to watch some of it on iPlayer, our favourites so far have been Belle & Sebastian, The Who, Palma Violets and Father John Misty. It certainly sets a high bar for the rest of the summer festival season.

It got us thinking of what we'd take along to our dream summer festival (assuming we could get a ticket). We'd need something cool to wear - perhaps a dress from Mata or a tee shirt from Rapanui. Definitely a spare pair of Pants to Poverty undies, and socks from Minga Berlin.

We'd be travelling light, but we'd still want one of our cool What Daisy Did bags - safe in the knowledge that we'd be truly unique! For when we needed a sugar rush we'd indulge in some Zotter chocolate - possibly even a bar of Scotch Whisky flavour if we were heading to T in the Park!

Then when we got back we'd want to tell you all about it - at which point we'd reach for DO Story, from our selection of DO Books. Then it would be time for a long lie down.

We'll let you know whether we get to indulge any of our fantasies at Green Man this year!

Midsummer Nights

by Andrew Williams | June 17, 2015 | 0 Comments

It seems incredible that we will see the longest day this week - with the weather in Hay not exactly tropical today! Hopefully we will get some warmer weather as we move in to July and August. It's a nice moment to reflect on what we've achieved so far this year, and look forward to what the rest of 2015 has in store.

We began the year with a bang, visiting Mata Traders and Refugee Beads in Atlanta, and our friends at IAO in Oaxaca, before meeting Fabrica Social in Mexico City. Through the year we have continued to add new suppliers, notably the amazing What Daisy Did (available on line soon), as well as receiving new deliveries from Ocean Sole, Sudsatorium, Zotter and Craftworks Cambodia

The big news is that next month we are moving to a bigger location in Hay, in the heart of town at Lion Street. If you've visited Hay and popped in to shops such as Booths, Hay Deli or Bartrums you'll know exactly where we are. With roughly 50% more floor space, a central location, and (crucially!) lovely big windows, we can't wait to welcome you to our new shop.

Until then we'll be celebrating midsummer by DJing at the second Mallyfest this Saturday at Baskerville Hall - hope to see you there to support a great cause! Happy Midsummer to you all.

Chocs away!

by Andrew Williams | May 14, 2015 | 0 Comments

We are now in the final stages of gearing up for the annual Hay Festival which begins next week. There are so many highlights to look forward to - we're just hoping we have time to go and see some of the events!

In any case, as you'd imagine, we have been stocking up on some of our best sellers in advance of the influx of visitors. Today we had a delivery from Zotter, our favourite ever chocolate supplier. We have loads more stock of all the incredible flavours you know and love - from goat's milk and sheep's milk, to a fantastic vegan selection, and not forgetting of course our all time favourite - tequila with salt and lemon!

You can grab a bar now online. And if you're anywhere near Hay during the Festival - come and say hello!
