With the weather currently taking a wintry turn it's worth sparing a thought for an intrepid gang for whom our current blizzards are like a balmy summer's day.
Legendary adventurer Sir
Ranulph Fiennes is leading a team of explorers to conquer
the last
great polar challenge: crossing Antarctica in winter. Their aiming to
raise $10m for
Seeing is Believing and provide crucial scientific data. We know so little about this part of the world that it really is the last great frontier.
Here at Eighteen Rabbit we're shivering at the very thought of it, but we do have a small link to the project via our fantastic T-Shirt suppliers at Rapanui. The cool gang down on the Isle of Wight are providing some specially-made Rapanui
baselayers and fleeces for use in the caboose where the exploration team sleep and

It's a bit chilly at the moment up at Hay Castle, so don't forget we currently have up to a third off all our knitwear. There may be snow on the way so stay warm out there! We're taking the opportunity during the quieter weeks at the start of the year to look for loads more interesting and unusual items to stock in time for Spring. Well, here we are at Christmas Eve. We have had a fantastic few weeks getting the shop up and running in Hay on Wye and of course on our website. We want to thank everyone who has taken the time to pop in and say hello, look us up online, follow us on Twitter or like us on Facebook. The support we've had has been truly encouraging and even though it is still very early days we are looking forward to 2013 with excitement. We have now confirmed with the great people at Hay Castle that we'll be here for the next few months. We hope to have lots more stock, different ranges and suppliers, and more stories to tell you about the people behind our products.
In the meantime we wish you all a peaceful Christmas and a relaxing New Year. Our shop is closed from the 25th - 28th December and during January and February we'll only be open Wednesday - Sunday. However we are here every day online!

We’re delighted to be the first UK stockists of Craftworks
Cambodia’s products. They’re an innovative group who produce bags and
accessories from recycled sacks and inner tubes, and jewellery made from bomb
casings and bullets recovered from the war in the 1970s. Pretty amazing stuff! We've been chatting regularly by email and getting a real insight into the group. They’ve sent us
information and photos of the individual artisans, many of whom are suffering with HIV/AIDS or disabilities due to mines.
We’ve just received our first instalment of jewellery which is now available here.
Unfortunately the artisan who produces the jewellery is currently unwell, but
he should be back on his feet soon and we’ll have some additions to the range.
Hope you like their products and, remember, every purchase goes towards helping these talented
people live a more comfortable and sustainable life.

As we approach Christmas it's easy to get carried away with the festive spirit, whether it's a mad dash for presents, over-indulgence at the dinner table or simply becoming engrossed in endless repeats of the X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing.
No-one likes a kill-joy, and here at Eighteen Rabbit we're all for having a good time - we think that as consumers we have a choice about what we buy, and that the decisions we make when shopping on the high street or online can make a real difference to people's lives overseas. That's what fair trade is all about.
At this time of giving and receiving I think it's important to spare a small thought for those with much less to celebrate than ourselves, whether they are here in the UK or overseas. I'd thoroughly recommend trying to catch up with some of the "Why Poverty?" season which has been broadcast in the UK on BBC4 and also around the world over the past few weeks. The films are varied and all tell an incredible story about the way we live today and the inequality we face in the world.
We hope that everyone can enjoy this season of peace in the spirit of brotherly love which the very first Christmas embodied. Most of the people we work with around the world aren't looking for handouts or charity - just fairness. That's something we're going to be working flat out to make a reality, slowly but surely, in 2013.
